Program Description

Bring Chronically Absent Students Back to the Classroom

School avoidance is a pressing issue for many school districts, interrupting students’ learning, straining district resources, and leading to conflicts with parents. This often necessitates prolonged home instruction or external therapeutic placements. The behavior of chronic student absenteeism may stem from various factors, including psychosocial school dynamics, perceived academic pressure, and fears of separation from parents/caregivers as students grow older.

The ESS approach to address school avoidance consists of 7 distinct components:

An ESS School Avoidance consultant provides specialized consultation and training for school and district-level personnel, focusing on:

  • Analyzing the diagnoses of each student exhibiting school avoidant behavior.
  • Collaborating with school personnel to create a unified and comprehensive approach to address the needs of school avoidant students.
  • Training staff on the ESS school avoidance protocols to ensure consistent implementation.
  • Working with the district to formulate a comprehensive plan for students’ successful reintegration.
  • Collaborative Approach: Multidisciplinary teamwork that promotes innovative problem-solving.
  • Tailored Interventions:  Individualized plans with frequent assessments to achieve optimal outcomes.
  • Immediate Support: Real-time communication channels for swift assistance and collaboration.

ESS also provides intensive, in-school clinical support meant to assist school avoidant students with repeat absences. As part of this support, a mental health clinician with specialized training in school avoidance is embedded in the district and provides the following support:

  • Conducting home visits and interventions.
  • Utilizing standardized School Refusal Assessment Scale-Revised to determine the source of avoidance and create a treatment and re-entry plan for the student.
  • Implementing interventions to facilitate the return of avoidant students to school, including cognitive behavior therapy, systematic desensitization, exposure therapy, and operant behavioral techniques.
  • Building connections with community resources and collaborating with existing providers.
  • Educating parents/caregivers on supporting their children by addressing, rather than accommodating school avoidant behaviors.

Our program equips educators, administrators, school counselors, and support staff with the tools and knowledge to identify, understand, and effectively address school avoidance. By emphasizing proactive strategies and evidence-based practices, we help districts disrupt the cycle of chronic absenteeism and foster an inclusive, supportive educational atmosphere.

Recognizing the link between school avoidance and chronic absenteeism, our comprehensive approach ensures that every student has the opportunity to succeed. Through targeted interventions and a commitment to evidence-based solutions, our program makes a lasting impact on absenteeism-related challenges in school districts. Whether offered as an extension of our clinical services or as a standalone resource, our professional development and consultation services enable schools to effectively tackle these critical issues.

Our goal was to bring students back, but ESS also stopped students from going out of district.
